I'll leave it to others to comment on the strength as I no longer have a Webley to measure, but for the cartridge it could have been modified to take cut
down .45 Colt cases. Their rims are thicker than .455 but still nowhere near .45 Auto Rim.

Subject to my uaual caveat about keeping loads to proper .455 levels, I doubt if the safety or strength of the revolver has been compromised by the thinning of
the recoil shield. After all, when being fired, the cartridge is lined up against the rear frame .....
I'd also suggest trying .45 Colt cases .... although, as Tacolneston indicates, they'll likely have to shortened (unless the chambers have been altered to accept them full-length .....) Alternatively, you could try to locate an unaltered recoil shield, so as to be able to fire .455 cartridges.

That kind of conversion is sheer and utter "BUTCHERY!" I have a Colt .455 New Service modified this way to shoot .45 Colt so the cylinder and frame
are now un returnable to .455 Webley/Eley/Colt. Luckily GrantR's suggestion of finding a new recoil shield may save the day. Perhaps a machinist could make
on for you?

I want to thank you each for your replies. There is a great deal of info on this site and I for one am thankfull be part of it. I was able to chamber a 45 Colt
round (full length) with no problem. I am going to look for a shield so the the gun can be fired using the 455 Webley cartridge.
Again thanks for your help rotchie |

Rotchie: Glad to hear we could help and I think you will enjoy shooting the gun with the original .455 cartridge as it lends another level of safety to using
it. I like trying to restore my "butchered" guns back to their original chambering and often times I wind up with a nice "convertible" with
a spare cylinder.

Rotchie,
Any luck finding a replacement recoil shield? I recently picked up a "parts gun" and it was butchered in the same way! Anyone have any ideas as where to find one? Bilbo |

I had a Mk.I with the same condition. I cut down .45 Colt cases to the proper length. Used a small tubing cutter. EDINOH.
