I understand that this gun was made by the Austrian goverment as a trial gun for the United States about 1870. The caliber is 45-70, has an Enfield rear sight and a standard front sight. The stock is a cut down 1864 US 58 musket stock. The stock was cut at the first band and cut the reverse of a pencil. The forarm was then cut to match the cut in the stock, I know because when I purchased rifle it was in two pieces. The pictures show were stock was glued by me. The lock plate is stamped US Sprungfield with the year 1864. The butt plate is also marked US. The extraction system is that of the 1866 second Allen conversation while the rest of the receiver and barrel seem to be factory made. The cleaning rod is like the one in my Austrian Werndl. Any help in identifing this rifle will be greatly appericated.
