Hi Gerrycan,
Look in the Reference Library forum for the post on electrostatic bore cleaners. You can buy them now, or make your own. They do wonders rehabilitating rough old barrels, especially Henry rifling, which seems to want to keep all the fouling and lead that it can catch. A Martini-Henry barrel on a Snider action is kind of a dream project of mine...someday. Cheers, Michael
I've never heard anyone complain about "too much quality" in a gun, but too little will get you a trip to the ER with your spare fingers in a
baggie.

I have recently had some experience in this with a 32-40 Win. '85. At 50 yd. I initially got 5-6" 'groups' and obvious
tipping of the bullets. The bore admittedly was 'iffy' but why not try? It was cleaned, and cleaned and electo cleaned by a friend overnight and patches came out white-ish (definately not dark). Going thru back issues of 'The Fouling Shot' (off. pub. of The Cast Bulllet Assoc.) I read all I found on 'fire-lapping'. I didnt want to use the courser grit, ie, 220ish, because one can always get more aggressive. JB Bore Polish was my choice. I made a moderate load (900-1000 fps), just started the bullet in the case mouth and finger applied the JB to the lube grooves and exposed bullet, then seated it in the case as normal. I single loaded and shot these at my 50yd junk as offhand practise 15 times. The bore still looks rough, tho better but I have been hitting a 3" swinger regularly with my std load and got a 1" and 1.5: three shot group the other day from a very casual deck rail 'bench'. A dozen shots thru it and fouling isnt bad and no signs of leading (yet). It may not be a match rifle but Im satisfied with this quick and painless technique. (I had nothing to lose in this case so I win) PS: I think a rough old bore would probably be hard on any paper patch but defer to those who know such things. |
