I see that Joel Black is the current high bidder on this (only bidder, actually) so it wouldn't be at all 'sporting' of any of the rest of
us to drive the price up, I'd say .....

Thanks Grant. I assumed it was for a 577/450 carbine. After I won it, it turned out to be for a .303. I emailed all of my friends around the US who collect
British cartridge firearms and none of them had one they were willing to part with. I was afraid I would have to get one of those awful SOG 303 carbines and
mentioned this to a friend who lives on the same rural road as I do. He had one he had gotten 30 years ago when they were being sold for floor lamp bases. It
turned out to be a very nice example. The only problem is that it has a perfect bore and I hit my 175 yard gong (its at least 12"s in diameter) on the
first try with a .303 load. It seems like a waste to use it for the Morris tube. I guess I'll continue to look for one with a typical cordite burned bore.

Joel, you really should read the description it said Enfield Martini, these were the conversion to .303. Should be plenty of rough .303 around.
Good luck in your search and with your new find. Jim |

Jim,
You are absolutely right. I always lump Martini Henrys and Martini Enfields together. Even though I have owned a few over the years, they are well out of my field of expertise. In truth, the only Martinis I can easily identify are those odd Westley Richards. |

Well I just won the second one. Gives me an excuse to go down to Front Royal to John Appleton's shop and pick it up in person....a dangerous thing. I
hardly ever get out of there without buying something I didn't go in for.

Richard,
I just heard from John that he sent mine out today. Please thank him for me. Tonight at a little gun show I picked up some soft lead cast bullets that should work perfectly. Tomorrow I will start loading up a bunch. |

Will do Joel. Once you bidded I passed on the first one and didn't want the second one to get away. However I wasn't as fortunate as you and had
another bidder run up the price a bit. Good for John, but I could have done without it.

Thanks Richard. It arrived today. I am soaking the brass nut and tube in penetrating oil before I try to remove it....you know what happens with dissimilar metals in contact with each other. What is amazing is that it has a great looking bore. It appears to be chambered for the long neck version. |

After penetrating oil and heat the brass nuts came off. Almost at the same time a dim light bulb went off in my head that told me all that work was unnecessary
because if they are stuck on the tube, they make it easier to unscrew the tube from the chamber. I screwed them back on and applied a little weak loctite. I
now have shot it 10 times. I'm happy to report it went off each time and made a hole in the snow. The snow is too deep for me to see my .22 swinging target
disks and I'm too lazy to go slogging through it to dig them out.

I stopped by and picked mine up today and had a good chat with John. He says hi to all and was surprised that Douglas was back and living in the wilds of
Montana.
For anyone interested, John has two Morris tubes left. They are all essentially identical (showing up in person I got to examine each one and take my pick....but there really is very slight difference). Even if you don't own a carbine to fit them, it is a darn slight easier to find a carbine than a Morris tube. For anyone that is interested in purchasing one, John's contact info is: The Gun Shop at Front Royal Attn: John Appleton 28 East Jackson St. Front Royal, VA 22630 Tel: (540) 635 0455 |
