Only the .577 Artillery 24 inch Type 1, and the .577 Long Enfield Pattern 1853 and that only during the later parts of 1855.

Pattern 1842, ??? caliber smoothbore. Is this gun a percussion conversion of an flintlock musket ( Brown Bess????)

Pattern 1842 smoothbore in .753 calibre carrying the service cartridge with a ball of .685 driven by 124 grains of powder. These were new built and not the 1839 flint conversions. The 1842s were phased out in favour of the 1851 Rifles by early in 1855 in the Crimea and, in any case, were only used by the 4th Division.

Yes - this was the main infantry rifle used throughout the campaign but gradually phased out by the 1853 Enfield until finally withdrawn from service in the Crimea in March 1856. There was never any smoothbore version of this arm.

No flintlocks for the British. The musket ball was the same diameter as the Minié bullet for the 1851 Rifle, viz., .685 in a bore of .702. The bullets were always in paper so the bore/bullet difference is much less than appears.

The old converted smoothbores of Pattern 1842 were bored up from .753 to .758 and used a completely different cartridge.

The completely newly built Minié Rifles of Pattern 1851 were .702.

The 1839 Muskets were originally made up from flintlock parts but the huge fire in the Ordnance Stores in 1841 destroyed most of them before they could be made up. Hence the hastened introduction of the 1842. There were problems straight away with the new Pattern 1842 which was of a higher specification than the 1839 which caused the gunmaking contractors such problems that they could not deliver the quantities specified. The result was the continued production of the 1839 model BUT MADE WITH NEW PARTS of the same appearance. Right up to 1851 the two patterns were made side by side with the lower graded 1839s being reserved for Militia, Colonial, Veterans etc., while the New Pattern went to the Regular Army. The 1839 revised models were given the same bayonet. They were referred to as the Extra Service Model and their bayonets are identified by the mark EX although they are the same as the 1842 normal Lovell Pattern, the original Hanoverian catch having been changed. During the period 1844-54 the Parliamentary Report states that for every two New Pattern of 1842 that were produced there were five of the Extra Service. As the bore and length were the same as the New Pattern, I suppose that it is quite possible that some may have arrived in the Crimea but I have no evidence of that and one cannot expect contemporary sources to differentiate as your average infantry officer would neither know nor care which patterns his men were carrying. They looked roughly the same and they handled exactly the same, taking the same cartridge, and in any case were withdrawn early in 1855.

The Navy used 39 inch muskets of Pattern 1842 for the Marines and Sea Service Muskets of 1842 which are the same but with 30 inch barrels for the sailors. By the time of the Crimea the Marines were getting the rifled up 39 inch muskets and the sailors had a mixture of unaltered 30 inch smoothbores and rifled up versions of the same. .753 for the smoothbores and .758 for the rifled ones.

The Artillery and the Engineers used a 30 inch variation of the smoothbore intended for the standard musket cartridge but with a bore of .733 . However, most, if not all, the Artillery took the new Pattern 1853 rifled carbine with a 24 inch barrel in .577 with them.

No Brunswicks were used by the British in the Crimea (although the Russian version known as the Luttich altered to 800 yard sighting and with an elongated bullet caused the British a lot of damage) but some of the Line-of-Battleships are believed to have still had a few of the limited production of 100 only of the 1840 Heavy Naval Brunswick for the belted ball in Calibre .796 still on board but they were not used.

The Rifle Brigade used the 1851 Minié and later the 1853 Enfield. Apart from the Artillery Carbine there were no other .577s in use until the Pattern 1856 Short Rifle appeared with its 33 inch barrel but this was well post Crimea.
