I know some of you are a bit confused about the term that I picked it while in SA--Braai.
Friend Otto, has sent me this Youtube video that will help you better understand how to conduct yourself at the braai and not be embarassed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vq2SOmwzjUU |

Grant,
Your house looks rather small.............I expected it a bit larger, .....with windows maybe.................( )
Sarah says."Clearly, he spends all his money on guns!!)
Douglas, Braai is a good word,.....especally in a part of the world where a "Barbie" is a curvy little doll! (we wouldn't want to give the wrong impression about what we play with when we get together, would we?!)

Yes, 'braai' is taken pretty seriously in SA, together with 'sundowner' and the complementary refreshments, of course... The only thing they
need, is some Belgian beers to make it perfect

Canadians coming down for the shoot bringing firearms made after 1898 need to apply for an ATF Temporary Import permit. http://www.atf.gov/firearms/form6nia/index.htm
It takes from 6 to 8 weeks to get this permit, so it already to late for this year. Canadians do not need an import permit to bring in firerams made prior to 1899. You simply must able to prove the firearm was made before 1899. To help facilitate your passage through U.S. Customs when you enter the U.S. print out the following docurments and bring them with you and present them when clearying Customs.
I am going to write a letter to the U.S. Customs Port Director at Sweetgrass and advise him of our shoot, as well as provide him with copy of my Flyer and the ATF Letter. I will also tell him how to date the rifles. He will also have my contact numbers if there are problems. Any Canadian coming down for my shoot who want a specific invitation, please drop me an email at ddgofer@hotmail.com and I will send you one. |

We have been working on some targets for this shoot and the Cannon shoot in August.

I will open our match with a three round volley in memory of those who have gone before us.
I had this wild idea a few minutes ago that I would set all the Knock down Shield and Pepper popper targets up at the 300 yard line, side by side like and impi preparing to attack. We have 4 shields, and five or six pepper poppers. Then we will fire the volley at the targets. Whatcha think? |

Well Grant it looks like it will just be the 4 of us at this shoot; You, Me Otto and .303SMLE. Jason got his vacation cancelled. Craig got married. Gary is
going inthe Army. Now I hear Martini Rick was in an accident.
Kind of disappointed that this is all the response there was to this shoot. Well at least next year I will have more free time to work on gopher hunting, writing my book and getting ready for the Cannon shoot in August.

Here's the targets Friend Ernie made for shoot shoot.
The shield is 30 inches tall by 14 inches wide and is mounted on a popper knock down target base. I tested this target at 100 yards. When you shot you do not hear or see the target go down. The 480 grain bullets put these targets down quick and hard. We also made some Gopher targets as a back up for the Rook and Rabbit shoot. Good thing, as our Rook and Rabbit target maker-Rick was in an accident and won't make the shoot.
There are five iron gophers in this picture, look at the top of the picture just right of center and you wll see the base of one of the targets. That is where it landed after getting hit by 120 grain 310 Cadet. Still working out what we are going to use for a 500 yard target. |

Just a reminder if you are coming from Canada be sure and print out the letter from ATF and the Flyer above. I notified the U.S. Customs Port Director responsible for the Ports along the central part of the Montana border about this shoot and provided him with the ATF letter and our flyer. He has now distributed the letter and flyer to all his supervisors and Port Directors.

Douglas,
Great target selection, looks like a lot of fun. If I weren't on late-night kid duty, I'd be on the next flight to Great Falls. Cheers, Michael
I've never heard anyone complain about "too much quality" in a gun, but too little will get you a trip to the ER with your spare fingers in a
baggie.

Douglas,
I unexpectedly find myself in Chamberlain, SD tonight on my way to Coeur D'Alene, ID. I will be leaving there on Saturday morning and thought I would drive a little northwest from there and get to Cut Bank. To my chagrin I see I can't get there without building a raft to put my SUV on and powering it up the Snake River. Instead I'll visit my old fishing partner who is retired outside of Helena. Good luck with the shoot! |

Good News! (..... and a wee bit of "bad news", though hopefully not as significant ....) Just got off the phone with Gary from Maple Creek, and he is coming along with me to your shoot! We'll be departing from Medicine Hat tomorrow afternoon and, barring a serious shakedown at the border (which is highly unlikely in view of the material you have provided) we should be in Cut Bank by late afternoon or early evening. The only firearms he will be bringing will be 'antiques' under U.S. law, so hopefully an "invitation" or "confirmation" addressed to him won't be a problem. Just to be safe, however, would it be too much trouble to get you to e-mail a similar message to him as you sent to me, perhaps with a copy to me so I can print it off here, in case he forgets or is unable to print it. (They are in the throes of packing up their house for their upcoming move, so who knows .....) (The "bad news" is that neither of us can stay for Sunday, and must depart after things wrap up on Saturday .... )
See you soon! (If we aren't too late getting in, we'll give you a holler .....) Now, if we could only convince Joel to come up it would be a fine gathering, indeed!!! (HINT .... HINT, JOEL!)

I am very much looking forward to this! I just have to meet the wife's weekend goals by tomorrow morning to keep the missus happy. The passport thing
isn't a big issue, I just have to go in and fill out a couple of papers, but we'll be dong that with the firearms anyway. I'm a bit saddened that I
my LEC misses the antique cut-off by a year, but the M-H (pending how much ammo I can swipe) and the MLE (no ammo issues here, I've got 100 or so rounds of
.303 in the cupboard) will suffice.
But Doug, if you could fire a formal invite this way that would be greatly appreciated. See you tomorrow! Gary |

Gary/Grant email me asap with Gary full name and address.
FYI, the Area Port Director For U.S. Customs has been made aware and and has advised his staff off the shoot and that a copy of the shoot annoucement constitutes our invitation. |

Douglas:
Congratulations, and heartfelt thanks, for an excellent shoot, affording such an enjoyable get-together with like-minded folk! As may be evident from the photo of the opening Volley, Gary D and I were a little too "laid back" that morning, not arriving on site until about 10:00 AM, and thus missing that event and the subsequent opportunity to sight in our rifles....... That certainly showed in my own dismal performance in the Provincial and the Mad Minute - putting only one scoring hole on the target in each case! Ironically, it was only after I had finished the Provincial (shot sitting, not able to figure out where my shots were going) that I noticed I had a portion of a rather nice group at the very bottom edge of the target and below that on the target board ....... They had been screened from view by the fairly tall grass. I had assumed that
my M-H would be printing high, as usual, and accordingly kept holding low to "compensate" - in fact the rounds were impacting at point of aim or even
lower!
"AHA!", sez I to myself (and others), "I'll just have to hold right on or a tad high for the Mad Minute" ..... I did so (standing) and the darn rounds all went high - most not even on the target. Same loads - go figure!
I did moderately well in the Provincial Handgun using my Webley WG Target revolver - but then was chagrined to be quite soundly beaten by Gary (not a handgunner) when I loaned it to him. He is no longer allowed to touch it ......
Thankfully, I finally redeemed myself a mite after allowing my arm to be twisted ( .... NOT! .... ) to use Bob's .310 Cadet rifle and ammunition to "clean up", so to speak, in the "Modified Rook and Rabbit" (AKA "Gopher") event ..... 8 hits on 11 gophers with the13 rounds permitted.
Again .... many thanks, DoubleD!!!
