Okay,
Stopped at a scrap yard on the way in to work. Mountains of steel plate. I can go back with a tape measure and find sizes close to your requirements tommorrow.

Rick:
Keep in mind that the quality/rating of the steel can make a big difference - very mild steel is quite liable to dent (or even get pocked) from just cast bullets, whereas other types (e.g. what they use for armour plate) won't pockmark even with quite high-velocity jacketed bullets .... Mind you, whether a scrapyard will be able to identify the differences for you is a moot point. In my locale we had long been able to access actual armour plate .... Medicine Hat is right next to the largest tank and artillery live-fire training area that the British Army has had for the past 3 or 4 decades - i.e. British Army Training Unit Suffield, located on the over 1000 square mile property of Canadian Forces Base Suffield. (Unfortunately, it has become a lot harder to get the stuff since 9-11, as they have instituted all sorts of safeguards to ensure that it isn't likely to end up in the hands of terrorists. Otherwise, I'd have been jumping right in to respond to DD's request.)

Grant:
I had considered that and thought the thicker 1/2" would be better. The scrapyards generally separate types of steel. Big difference in what they can sell the various materials. Most of the stuff around here comes out of demolished factories. There are several General Motors sites that are still being cleared. The type of plate usually seen laying around is either structural, boiler, or AR (abrasion resistant). With structural making up the vast majority. I'll look around and try to find the best looking structural I can find. The other types are rather expensive. Rick |

AR is one type we want. Targets for use under 100 yards will have to be 1/2 over 10o yards 3/8 is fine. I have limited access to internet right now, but check
the IHMSA website for their recommendation on steel.

Rick, Is 1/2 inch plate till availble? |

Douglas, as an oh by the way, I intend on being there unless something really bad happens. I'll probably be hunting around for a fellow traveler
considering the length of the drive.

Richard.
I not sure this is going to happen in 2009. So far the Gun club is lukewarm on the idea, mostly luke...we'll see what is said after the next gun club meeting. If it does happen it will be around Labor Day. Why don't you go to the Alberta shoot its only 300 miles up the road from me. If I do a shot this year it will probably be a short notice demonstration shot for the local boys to see that I am not crazy. I want to coordinate this shoot with the folks from Alberta and the local Farmers planting/harvest schedule. The range is in the middle of a wheat field,
Grant and Rick, Any 1/2 inch x 13 inch x 1/2 inch steel plate? Need five for the Rabbit targets. For Rook need 1/2 inch x 6 1/2 inch x 10 inch steel plate. Ten of these would be good. |

Here's some targets I came up with for a Rook Rifle course.
I need to find some 1/2 steel plate. I have a perfect set up for them. As you can see down range is all tall grass. I have been thinking about taking the lawn mower out to range and cutting a path around the range. Along the path I will cut shooting lanes. At the end of each lane will be one of these targets. You walk along the trail with your rook or cadet rifle and shoot at the target, hit or miss. You could shoot until you hit or it could one shot per target. |

DD,
I'll check on the steel tonight. I've been in deer killing mode the last couple of months and it sort of slipped my mind. BTW, what's the first plate size again? You have 1/2" x 13" x 1/2" Rick

Rick,
I can send you templates. But don't get any steel for me yet. I have been looking at the Flat rate boxes and none of them are big enough for the rabbit targets. I have a local guy who will cut these out for $5 a target if I get 5 of of each and supply the Steel. I forgot to ask how much to weld the foot on. I also will have to make target bases out of rebar and flat bar. It won't be cheap, but it won't be as expensive as it can be. By the way will you be eating venison or tuna fish this winter?

How about some discussion on when to hold a Montana Playday.
The Alberta shoot is June 20 and 21. Would any one consider coming to Montana the weekend before, June 13 and 14 or the weekend after June 27 and 28? |

Let me know when you are ready for me to look for some steel. The bottom of the scrap market fell out so its reasonable at the moment.

Rick one 13 x 13 x 1/2 inch piece of plate is gonna cost $27 to send ups and about a but cheaper Parcel post. I think this is a no go. Do you want the
templates to make a set of your own?

$27.00!! Are you kidding me? I hadn't considered shipping. I would like to make my own set so I'll take you up on your offer. Thank you.

I'm really looking forward to the the Alberta play day. Like Grant you are even closer, so if this does pan out, for certain I will be there if this is
held any weekend in June (July and August are always bad for me).

Gary, Are you saying you are good with the weekend before ore the weekend after the Alberta shoot.

Douglas:
I gather that is what Gary means .... and I should jump in here and mention that I should be OK with either weekend, also. He and I will most likely 'carpool' to the Alberta shoot, and also to yours if it goes ahead. (Maple Creek is only 60 miles east of Medicine Hat, on the Trans-Canada Highway ....)

Yes, any weekend in June is good by me. (And that gives me 6 months from now to see how many other rifles I can add to my collection. I think it would be a
shame to bring any fewer than 4, no?)
