I joined the gun club today. I did this to support the local community and to have a place to do my target shooting. I also have an ulterior motive…I want to put on a shoot.
The range is locate about 8 miles from town--Cut Bank Montana.
There is a 50 yard range and a 300 yard range.
This is a dry range, no water. No outhouse.
No covered shooting positions.
No club house
Visitors must pay a range fee.
Anybody interested in coming to Montana next summer for a shoot that I will put together?

I have only a general outline in my head. LLots of things have to happen...most importatnatly i have to convince the gun club that this new guy who has been
amemeber for two days should put on a event.
Just looking at the club rules, this is goign to hae to be some what structured. Start with 2 or three hours open range so everyone can get therer guns tuneed up. Then the Opening volley in memory of those who have gone before us...and I must say I lke Grants opening volley of 5 rounds. Mine has always been 1 one round, but the 5 round voley is just awesome. Then there would be the matches Military rifles. The provincial. Cadet Rifle match---format to be decided Rook and rabbit---a walking course with knock down targets. Clang and Bang. Gongs/knockdown targets at various ranges Long range Target. There could be some of these and none of these. Anything we shoot wil be big bore for smoke an noise. There didn't seem to be all that big a following or interest in the small bore stuff at the Matches I have attended. I am also considering contacting the folks who we have suported all these years and ask them to donate stuff for Door Prizes. Any match I hold will not have any prizes for match winners. I have for too many year seen the same individuals win the prizes over and over and over again. Prizes if we are to get themwill be given away by drawing only. Entry Fee there will be one..Club rules. I also will have to buy Targets and Medals. Time will be late July or Early August. Cut Bank has Lewis and Clark days at the end of July and that weekend would not be a good weekend. Harvest starts mid august so we wuldn't be able to shoot when the wheat is being harvested. The Range is in the middle of a wheat field.

Cut Bank, Mt. is 26 hours from Flint, Mi. That's quite a haul, but with a year notice maybe I can swing it.

Well I want to build 5 or 10 of these.
Those are 1 inch squares so roughly 10 in x 10 in. I am also going to build some Rook and rabbit targets. But I haven't drawn them yet. I also want to build some Zulu war shields...Warrior size not chief size...the folks who were in Alberta will know the difference. That's the little one in the picture.

Flint has probably 500 junkyards and 200 scrap yards (give or take a few). I have a stash of steel out back as well. I'll see what I can scrounge up for
you.

Great to hear about your prospective shoot! I don't think I can attend (farm work at that time of year) but I hope it all falls together. I Do believe this is going to work!! At the risk of incurring your wrath, can I go back "off topic"? Re. the shields? In England when I was a kid, every arms fair had dealers with umbella stands full of Zulu spears, And some shields. These had been brought home from the Zulu wars in great abundance, and there seemed an endless supply from old country houses. In all my time there, I never saw a small shield, all were as Grant stated, about 4 feet roughly. I know many fine Zulu leaders died in the wars, but not enough to account for such amounts of large shields. Also, as each regiment carried different coloured shields so as to be recognised at distance, the tiny shields would not work for this purpose. This, (along with old photos) seems to support Grant's assertions. All the best, Richard. |

It's hard to say when would work, Douglas. This year, I'm about done haying now, just couple of hay-yards to bale, and harvest is Weeks away, so this year mid - late August would have worked. Some years, haytime runs into harvest, so please don't hold your breath for me. Just plan it for the majority, and I'll attend if at all possible!!! I think when you get the shoot up and running, it'll become the "Mecca"..... (As it is close enough to the border to attract Canadians, yet more attractive to the lads from the US of A who don't want to risk losing baggage on "international" flights!) |

Actually...It,s impresive to see an ex military field still maintained out in the middle of nowhere....not that I,m saying Cut Bank is the middle
of nowhere DD...
