I need 2 boxes of 10 gauge 3 1/2" mag lead buckshot, 00 or 000 will do. I can only get steel up here for the 10 gauge and our local store says they can't get these loads for me. I have seen them in catelogues like Wholesale Sports so should be available in Calgary or someplace down south. If any of you can find these for me and are willing to get some, I can send you a cheque and pick them up at the June shoot. Send me a PM if it is possible to do so. -Ryan

Federal Premium (load P108) is 10ga mag 00 buckshot. Firstly, a reminder that the shoot is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, 20th and 21st June .... Mark your calendars if you haven't already done so! 2. Secondly, the 1885 North West Rebellion theme for this year's shoot was presenting something of a dilemma for suitable "theme targets" .... Certainly, nothing seemed as "obvious" as the Zulu shields or Mahdist jibbahs which were ideal for previous themes. Indeed, from the viewpoint of the Dominion troops engaged in the Rebellion campaign, there was a decided lack of targets to shoot at throughout the whole affair ..... because the Metis and Indians weren't "sporting" at all - fighting from cover for the most part. Moreover, a distinguishing feature of the skirmishes and battles which took place was the sophistication of the defensive works prepared by both Metis and Indians. In most cases they chose the battleground, and had prepared quite extensive rifle pits, with timber parapets pierced by firing ports, from which to engage the government forces - leaving the latter nothing to shoot at except banks of logs or - for real 'sharpshooters' - the firing ports piercing them However, that very fact ultimately suggested the theme targets ..... especially considering the nature and appearance of Richard's target butts! All we have to do is tack up a series of black rectangles with simple white ovals in them, to represent the firing ports and the heads visible through them .... and those are the targets! The visual effect could be something like this - Good job if you can place your shot "through" the firing port, and "top marks" for an actual hit on one of the defenders! 3. Thirdly, the climax of the Battle of Batoche was the bayonet charge which finally routed the defenders - Richard and I accordingly agree that this year, in addition to the usual individual and volley firing, we simply must have a bayonet charge! So remember to bring a bayonet for at least one of your rifles .... preferably a Snider-Enfield, of course, that being the arm carried by the Dominion of Canada Militia troops in 1885. (And if you don't yet own a bayonet to fit any of your rifles, you have now been given the perfect excuse to finally get one .... and plenty of advance notice to work on it!) 4. Richard has rightly noted that for the evening meal on Saturday, barbecuing the meat has been rather a bottleneck, time-wise. He has accordingly suggested that perhaps some roasts could be put in the oven, leaving the barbecues for baking the potatoes - and supper could proceed in a more timely fashion. I agree wholeheartedly with that suggestion, and we both feel that the perfect choice for meat this year would be buffalo. Such a choice would result in rather more cost being incurred, so we would almost certainly have to set a fixed monetary contribution (not excessive, I'm sure) for everyone in attendance. Would that meet with everyone's approval? 5. Every effort will be made to ensure that the space for laying out guns, and the firing positions (including raised prone-shooting points) are enlarged this year. Also, Richard is well aware that if it stays wet this year, a drier location for the shoot will be necessary .... so he is thinking about that. In the meantime, however, everyone should continue to plan for yet another "rubber boot shoot"! We await your comments and suggestions. Maybe I can rig up a plug bayonet for the cadet. 4) The bison sounds like a fine idea, I am not sure how long I will be able to stay yet. My wife and I are still planning....... 5) I have the boots I need. I am not too worried. Dry would be good though. -Ryan

I've taken bayonets back and forth across the border several times and, frankly, never even gave a thought to whether there might be any restrictions. If nothing else, it seems that the border people are so intent on making sure everything is in order with regard to the firearms that nothing else is a concern .... The head peaking out from the cover is perfect, it will works very well and carry on the campaign specific theme nicely. A bayonet charge through the muskeg? Hmm, now that will be interesting. Muskeg? what muskeg? It'll be as dry as a bone this year! (maybe...in small print!) Actually, putting a muskeg between the protagonists would be very sound practice for the defenders. believe it's been done once or twice!.. Will we require Military Police?,.... to shoot anyone unwilling to participate in the charge??

Sergeant Major Posts: 362 (04/08/09 21:38:22) Sergeant Major Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Richard, here is another idea for targets, I can't take credit but I do like it, my friend Gary who is comming to the shoot suggested that another target that mimics the rifle pits can be set up by using two logs lying horizontaly one on top of each other with a bit of space in between them and in the space we can have metal discs about human head size, so that way we are shooting at the same sort of targes that Grant designed but here it is the simple ring or no ring that tells the tale and we have more of a three dimensional feel to the "rifle pits". I do have a three bander and that bayonet you bought at Bud Haynes but was not planning to bring that one along, I will be shooting my "fast twist" two bander. I even have a repro Yataghan but the antique bayonet lug is way bigger than the repro Euro arms one that the bayonet fits on. Branko

The log idea has merit, I'm thinking more for a longer range gong shoot, as it would be very hard to hear any strikes in the 50 yd volley fire. If I see an original yataghan going cheap on Sat.
