Gentlemen,
I do not wish to detract from the East Coast playday thread, but have a rather nagging concern about our Alberta shoot.
I feel I let things down a bit in the organising of events.
I have just read Michael's excellent post on events for the "East coast playday" and wish I had had it together more at our shoot.
My question is;
Would anyone like to step up to organise tha actual events?
(Douglas kindly ran the events we had , and did it in a very proffesional way, but seing Michaels list, I see how wh could have had More very enjoyable
events, without being over -organised)
It appears there is much to do before the shoot, and this seemed to take up all my time, leaving the actual shoot to more or less sort itself out.
I was not happy with this state of affairs, and would appreciate input.

It was a great playday Richard, nothing to be concerned about. the Alberta playday has a flavour all It,s own which is why everyone comes back every year and
there,s such a good turnout.
Don,t be in a hurry to change things...That said, Douglas did a nice job of the provincial...next year Douglas?

Richard, George has said it quite well. The Alberta Gum Boot Shot has its own flavor. That's what makes it special. Don't change it.
If you are concerned about the organization of your shoot, lets discuss it. I only ran the provincial after you asked me to to run the Provinvial. Perhaps what you need is some one to help you in the form of a designated Colour Sergeant--Range Officer to run the range and keep things moving. Despite my claim to Candian Heritage, A True Canadian should ramrod your event. Grant would be my first choice. He did a lovely job of the Volley. His Volley event is much better than my Volley event. I hope once I find a place to live, to set up my own shoot. It will be different than the Alberta shot; different than the Boz330; different than the NH shoot; different than the IacoppiNZ shoot and probably similar to the WV Playday. That variation is the draw. Each shoot should have its own flavor. They also should have a common link or thread--That could be Provincial stage. The Provincial should only be a stage not the entire event. One thing that should be done for any of these events no matter where held is post an announcement. When I crossed the border into Canada I was asked if I had a formal annouchement, invitation or flyer for the shoot. I know this a requirement to get the Temporary ATF permit for Non U.S. persons to bring a gun in for a shooting match in the U.S. Who ever hosts one of these events should post an annouchment and invitation. This can be printed by the shooter so they can apply for their appropriate permits well in advance. Right now I am collecting all the informatio that I can find on the process for moving guns across borders. I have the Canadian, U.S. and Austrailian requirements to move guns in and out of each of those countries. What I stilll need to find is the requirements for Canadians and Australians to transit the U.S. There are two agencies that may have jurisdiction and I am going to write each of them for guidance. As soon as I have all the information I willl make a separate post on the subject. |

One other point Set your dates early like now! For two years, I believe you have held your shoot on U.S. Fathers Day weekend. The Weekend that has the third
Sunday of the month of June.
I suggest you schedule you shoot for next year right now. June 21 and 22, 2009 This long range palnning allow people ample time to plan tocome ot the event. Short notice limits the ability of people ot plan and especially to get the necessary permit to cross the border---legally. |

I thought the Alberta Shoot was one of the best-organized, best-attended, and most generally enjoyable shoots I've ever been to. The New England Shoots are fun, because it's usually just Victor, Joe, and I playing with our latest acquisitions (for Joe, it's window shopping--every shoot he finds another gun he's got to have  ) and any unsuspecting range users brave enough to pull the trigger on a .577 Snider. We don't have a BBQ, folks staying
overnight, or gophers (though one year at Joe's range, we had turkeys flaunting death by walking across the back berm). I thought the Alberta shoot was
positively inspirational!
If you'd like to have other events for folks to shoot, like ISSO, just have targets available and rules posted. Of the 8 events I listed, you actually had 4 of them already, and had targets for two others (ISSO and Rolling Thunder @ 100 yd) if folks had been so inclined, plus gongs and skeet. That only leaves clays on a backer and Miniature Military Rifle. The MMR match targets are just printed out from a scan that Douglas sent out years ago. I can email it to you. Putting together clay boards is wicked easy and can be done at the range with a cordless drill and 1/4" bit, a box of clays, and a roll of self-locking ties. Drill the clay, tie the tie and put it through the hole, punch a hole on a cardboard backer with a pen knife (the used Mahdi targets could serve double-duty, even), and pull the zip tie through the cardboard. I have two rolls of zip ties. I will dig them out and send you a hundred or so. They're reusable, assuming no one actually hits the clay dead center. Just because we have targets and rules for various events (and usually loaner guns and ammo) doesn't mean we actually shoot all of them.

I like the Alberta shoot set up as well. Plenty of informal shooting time is good, I can just shoot various rifles/shotguns, trading them out as barrels heat
up and test drive Brett's Martini express rifles, Richards latest sporter etc. Mix in a few events and clays at certain times and it is a real winner.

Thanks to all for the input and reccomendations.
We should try to put together an invitation, inc. events for cross-border travellers. And fix date, as per Douglas' reccomendation. Will June 21st and 22nd 2009 work for everyone? Let me know how this sits, and Thank You again. R. |

I hope I have a home by then soI can get set up and get my guns shooting. For the past three years it's borrowed guns and what ever loads are laying around for it. Next year I want to shoot my own gun with dedicated loads.

I also think the relaxed "play day" atmosphere of this gathering is one of its strong points! (I attend .... and run .... enough "organized" matches that I've truly got my fill of them!) Greetings all,
with the fall here I seem to be getting into a contemplative frame of mind again and so have been thinking about the 2009 Alberta shoot. Richard I think you worry too much about the organization, I have always liked the fact that the shoot at your place is low key and more about enjoying meeting people I have not seen for a year as well as shooting one of my all time favorite guns. So two things have been working their way through my mind. The first is theme, I am kind of partial to keeping things more local, what about a Riel Rebellion theme, now it does pose two problems and that is targets as to what should they look like as well as a much more narrow time line for firearms. The other things I guess would be to ask everyone who has attended in the past and plans to attend again do we want to make the shoot more formal with more organization and more scoring or still keep it as is? I favour keeping the shoot as is, definitely keeping the mad minute that was great to fire a volley, it gives a bit more of a realistic feel. I think the 2008 match had just the right combination of organization and also plinking away for just fun. Any comments?? Branko |

I'll weigh in again on the side of keeping pretty much to the format which has developed so far ......
I also agree that the North West Rebellion would be a good theme. And I don't think that the time-line really need restrict the choice of weapons - it could still be very much a "bring 'em and shoot 'em if ya got 'em" type of gathering. (Besides, the 1885 Riel Rebellion saw a considerable variety of firearms in use - from flint and percussion muzzle-loaders through state-of-the-art repeating rifles by the Métis side, and both Snider-Enfield and Martini-Henry rifles, as well as NWMP/Militia-pattern 1876 Winchesters (and other assorted repeaters) by the Government forces ......)

Sorry I missed your post 'till now. OK, Riel rebellion it is. (Do we get to hang someone as a grand finale??!?)........and has anyone got a gatling? Sarah was hoping we might go to India next time, but maybe we can go there the following year. Any ideas/thoughts on targets most welcome. Pukka. |
