loading primers |

I am having a hard time on getting information from local sources on how to reload the .577-450 cartridge. I have everything figured out except on how to put
the new primer into the shell casing. The only thing that local stores have are the little hand reloading tool for primers. As the MH cartridge is too big,
that will not work for me. What do you use to overcome that issue? Thanks.

How 'bout the primer arm, as supplied with nearly all reloading presses? you just need a shellholder to make it work, no different from any other
cartridges. That's assumung you didn't throw it away when you bought it...

A friends father gave me his old RCBS single stage press. All he gave me was the press. I have no idea what it would even look like. Is it attatched to the press or is it a seperate tool? |

If you don't have one that came with the press then you could get something like a Lee ram-prime. The ram goes into the press where a shell holder would go
and the case is held in place where the die would be and a primer is pressed into place.
There are many different ones and some are separate tools. Any store with reloading supplies can get you something that will work, you just need the proper shell holder for the cases. -Ryan |

Yes, my press has something on it that looks like that. It slides into the groove on the ram. I have been messing with it and I am unsure as how it would seat a primer into the shell casing. Thanks. |

I have the priming arm, but not all of the little accessories that go with it. I assume they don't sell those parts seperately. So if I buy a new priming
arm from Midway there should be nothing stopping me from reloading primers. Am I correct on my assumption. Thanks.

Keep in mind that the original reloading kits from the 1870s really didn't have a priming device, you placed the primer on a wood plank, centered the
case's primer hole over the primer and gently tapped the primer in with a small hammer using a wooden dowel inside the case. This is not unlike the old Lee
Loaders and I have done such on more than one occassion awaiting Dave Davidson providing me the right shell holder for my latest obscur round. Wear gloves and
safety glasses for the obvious reasons. While I've never popped one off, by father did years ago. As long as you go gently, you can load the primers flush
with realative easy. I'd say between my father an I we've loaded over a 1,000 primers this way and to the best of my memory only had one
popped....which evidently did smart a bit despite my father wearing thin leaver gloves.

One can also use a priming die which comes with all you need--the die screws into the press, a priming arm socket slips in to the press ram in lieu of a shell
head holder, while your shell head holder slips into the top of the die.
http://www.buffaloarms.com/browse.cfm/4,1850.html I have one of these and rather like it. Works with both large and small primers. |

You ar going to need a shell holde to fit 577/450 case. Contact ch4d.com for a shell holder.

If you contact CH4D they also sell a "Universal Primer Arm", like the one in Norm's picture of 8.53.54.

Not too long ago I bought some bits for my primer arm at Gander Mountain or Cabelas 'off the rack'.

Another option is to buy a Lee Auto-Prime II. I brought one & it fits into the top of my RCBS Rockchucker just fine.
With the right shell holder I have used it to prime both .577 Snider & 577/450 Martini. I have also used it to prime .303 Brit. The Lee auto prime (the hand one) apparently does not fit the larger .577 cases. Peter (Burlington, Ontario) |

The RCBS hand priming tool works with .577-450 shell holders.I am referring to the single stage version, not auto prime or strip
feed.Huntington's,Graf's or Midway should have them in stock.I haven't used any other priming tool since I bought one years ago.
Ken It appears this tool is no longer available.I'd better take care of the one I have.

I have used the cartridge sitting on a block and a rod within to tap down also. If the case is a solid head it
is easy to make. If 'balloon head' you need to drill a cavity in the end of the rod so as to not collapse the primer pocket and help center the rod. It really works quite well and is cheap. Another approach is to use a standing rod (Ive used a discarded engine valve for solid head cases) as simple as a dowel in a wood base. Slip your case over it, primer pocket up, set a primer on it, and press in with a small arbor press. A short stub of rod chucked into a drill press will do as well. The commercial priming tools are fancier versions of the above. Buy one when you KNOW what you want. |

If you have a drill press, use a piece of 7/16" brass rod chucked into the turned-off drill press, and place the case over the primer on the press'
table. Use the drill press as an arbor press to push the case onto the primer. Not elegant, but it works.

I've had a RCBS Automatic Priming Tool for ages. Check it out at http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=457599 . I recommend it if you have some bench space on which to mount it. It will work with the M-H and Snider shell holders. You can zip through cases once you get it set up and get your rhythm going. Kim |
