Lance Corporal Posts: 48 (04/18/09 15:47:54) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Now that I have the proper shell holder for my expensive Jamison brass, I'm distressed to find out that I cannot seat primers with my RCBS benchrest priming tool! They are standing proud by several thou. Tapping them with a raw hide mallet on a wooden surface with a mandrel inside the case is giving me the creeps. I've tried both Winchester large rifle and pistol primers as well as Federal. That doesn't seem to be the answer. Thinking that perhaps the pockets are not deep enough, I tried my RCBS multi-station case prep machine that has the primer pocket uniformer as well as a hand held unit. Nada ..... To say that I am annoyed and disgusted is an understatement. I'm starting to think a lot more highly of my 'cheap' CBC 24 ga brass. Who's got the solution to this, my latest Snider dilemma? Mine is MH I think I am using Federal large rife primers I don't fancy going out into the cold dark damp blowy night just to confirm this I will do that tomorrow as I come home from work. I know I'm a big wimp. I know I acidentaly put a large pistol primer in one and it sat low so pockets are definitely not shallow. Pinky It is not a gun. It is not a Weapon. It is not a firearm. It is a single cylinder single stroke internal combustion engine with a free floating piston!

I solved the problem by the expedient of seating the large rifle primers as deeply as they would go with the RCBS benchrest tool, using the correct primer insert rod. Then I changed rods to the small primer size and fully seated them home, the primer cup compressing on the spring, allowing the interior rod to do the final seating. No, I haven't contacted Jamison and won't bother. Now that I know the answer, I can live with it. Just another Snider challenge. Todd 'Sjrt. J. McMurphy RE'

I just learned that I couldn't seat the bullets in my Jamison brass without incurring a crimp using my CH-4D die. It happened with the thinner walled CBC brass, but was much less of a problem. I ended up seating the bullets with the seating die from my 50-70 die set. If I didn't have the experience I've got with BPCRs and the various dies sets I've accumulated for them, I'd be a very frustrated reloader right now. A lesser experienced reloader without other dies would be tearing his hair out. These I loaded with a duplex load consisting of 6 grs of SR 4759 and 60 grs of FFg; a compressed 1/4" fibre wad on top. I settled on this as a trial load considering the reduced capacity of the thicker walled/solid head Jamison brass. I think it will be quite sufficient. Todd 'Sjrt. J. McMurphy RE'

Veteran of the Regiment Posts: 1077 (04/20/09 20:11:53) Sergeant Major Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Todd This jamison brass must have some mighty thick walls even with Rocky mountain turned cases I could easily get 85gr of black in there with space for wool and my drawn Kynoch will take 100gr of black with wool over it and a thin felt wad. Don't ask! As for the crimp is it not possible to adjust for different length bullets? On my lee dies there is a bit that can be adjusted in or out to get the bullet depth I make sure my die is set out so the crimp part does not touch the case mouth then adjust the bullet seating bit in a bit extra to make sure the bullet seats in properly haven't had one fall out yet. I am using a .590 dish based bullet which is tight to start with so I don't need a crimp really. Pinky It is not a gun. It is not a Weapon. It is not a firearm. What bullet diameter? What brand dies? Sounds like you have the seating die improperly adjusted. Be sure your casese are trimmed to proper length Turn the die out a full turn at a time until you get no crimp. Put a sized case in the press and seat a bullet and adjust the seating stem until you have the seating depth you are looking for. Back the seating stem way out. Now screw the seating die in 1/8 turn and run the case with bullet up in the die. Check the crimp. Keep turning the die in 1/8 turn until you get the crimp you want. At that point with the round up in the die, screw the seating stem in until it contacts the bullet. Lock everything down. Lance Corporal Posts: 51 (04/21/09 07:52:21) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Guys I'm loading for the 577 Snider using .590FB bullets, a commercial product, until I start casting my own. I'm sizing them and lubing them with SPG. Having been a reloader since the early '70s, I have a fair idea about what I'm doing with the 577 Snider, just as I do with any other BPCR I load for. Not to mention experience with the .270, .30-'06, 6mm. .243, .222 and a host of pistol calibres. I'm not overly impressed with this Jamison brass so far, other than the fact that it is pretty skookum stuff. The adjustments with the CH-4D dies leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion. I expander plug for example, as to be barely turned into the press and still sits too deep, requiring a case mouth expanding by 'feel', rather than a bottoming at the top of the ram stroke. Occasionally, this runs into an overly flaired case mouth; no big deal, other than unncecessary working of the brass. The sizing die is perfect and ingenious in that it goes into the press from the 'bottom up' as opposed to the conventional 'top down'. I don't mind having to resort to the measures required to get the desired results, I'm just surprised that it's necessary at all. I didn't say that I was unable to put more powder in the cases. I think I could easily get 85 grs into them. I just don't want to enjoy the knuckle rap from such a load. I'm already experiencing that from the 5 grs Unique/70 grs FFg load I've tried in CBC brass. It isn't something I need to do to get the desired results on paper or game. Moose are not difficult to drop, nor are 400 lb black bears. Todd 'Sjrt. J. McMurphy RE'

I have the same problem with my CH-4D expander die; the die body isn't nearly long enough, so you can't back it out far enough to properly set your neck flare. They make different lengths of expander die bodies that you can buy seperately, but I don't know why they can't sell you the right one to begin with.

If whatever load you are using fills up the space, simply stick a Minie ball on top of it. When chambered, the relationship of the Minie to the bore is exactly as it would be in the Enfield before conversion.

I'll contact CH-4D about a longer expander plug. It will be one less aggravation in reloading. Fred I do not understand reloading for ANY cartridge without the use of dies! Things like uniformity and quality control come to mind. There is also no need to fill cases to capacity other than to simulate original loadings, which we are NOT doing with modern balloon headed cases like CBC or solid head like the Jamison. Original foil/paper wrapped cases used a compressed paper wad in the base which had the effect of reducing capacity. Noted BPCR authority Steve Garbe has written on the topic of less than capacity loads in BPCRs (with or without wads) and reports no ill effects or safety issues. Accuracy and velocity are affected. As I stated earlier, one of the US military arsenals did extensive studies in this regard with the Springfield 45-70, going to extemes in distance to bullet ratios. It is with reduced charges of smokeless powder usings wads that brings on the phenomen of chamber ringing. I shoot smokeless loads that consist of 40% of full BP loads using no wads with excellent results. This ratio of smokeless to BP even suits the regulation of some double rifles. 'Sjrt. J. My rifle probably doesn't know it's supposed to blow up with such a load... Bottom line, it works, shoots accurately and presents no problems. However, I wouldn't go below 70% fill with BP.

Todd, I'm sorry if I misunderstood the cartridge you were talking about, it's my Martini dies that I have issues with, and it's the body you can get longer, not the plug. The longer die body allows you to raise the plug higher, and thus adjust the neck flare to coincide with the top of your press stroke.

There is no die body per se, only the plug and locking ring. It's too long and needs shortening to allow more travel for the flare to happen at the top of the stroke. I've been thinking about making a collar that fits around the ram underneath the press so it can't extend as far into the throat area.

The new Jamison brass I needed to expand a couple thou. to take the lead. On a few rds. I expanded too much and unable to chamber, but most were not a problem . However on every rd. I had to give the block a light tap to close on the loaded cartridges. I only used 40 gr. of FF, and 345 g lead slugs. Brass shows no sign of cracking, primers unmoved, extracted very smooth and the 2 band Sgts Mk II** looks like it can handle a whole lot more. These were my first at re loading 577 and I did them by hand, I don't have dies in this calibre.

It took a couple of firings and a trim before the all the cases chambered and extracted smoothly. Hopefully you get similar results after the next time out. My loads are 70 gr of APP, wool wad, MC card, and a Lee Liquid Alox lubed .600 round ball. Deadly on wild soda cans and marauding water filled plastic jugs inside 100 yards. That's exactly what I wanted for a casual days shooting so I'm pleased.

First to start, load 85 grains of Fg. Over the top of that put 3 grains of kapok, dacron, carded sheeps wool or cotton. This will fill the air space and will need to be compressed in the case with a dowel or pencil. Next put your wonder wad and seat it to the bottom of the neck. Ad two card thin card wads. Next you need a bullet of the correct size. Your .459 bullet is to small. The major diameter of the bore of the British Military Martini Henry is .464, not .458 like American 45 calibers. To complicate this the Martini has an 8 inch long section of taered throat that is .468 diameter. .464 diameter bullets work alright, but .468 diameter work better. I had to modify another brand by a little judicious filing to solve the same problem.
