I understand that this gun was made by the Austrian goverment as a trial gun for the United States about 1870. The caliber is 45-70, has an Enfield rear sight
and a standard front sight. The stock is a cut down 1864 US 58 musket stock. The stock was cut at the first band and cut the reverse of a pencil. The forarm
was then cut to match the cut in the stock, I know because when I purchased rifle it was in two pieces. The pictures show were stock was glued by me. The lock
plate is stamped US...

Gentleman,
You have made me back up and rethink the 45-70 theory. I shot the rifle today as a 45-70 and it did not shoot well. It would hold 6-8 inch groups, but I
like smaller groups. Came home, read your responces and got to thinking. Could this be something other than a 45-70.

I did a chamber cast to see and am surprises with the results. The bore is 3 rifles and 3 groves. The groves are approx. .22 inches wide and the lands about .2

The receiver could be Berdan rather than Allin. A view along the top of the closed action and barrel would be informative. I just noticed the barrel where it
joins the action... that fluting reminds me of an 1881 Marlin... or a Sharps, which would explain the 45/70 part. If the action is an 1866, there shouldn't
be a joint, as the trough was cut directly into the barrel. Original 50/70 barrel chopped, with reduced caliber replacement barrel screwed in? I still say
it's a Belgian...

Is it possible the gun started out as one of the M1866 rifles sent to France for the war of 1870? The Liege trade got hold of many American rifles,
muzzle-loaders and cartidge guns, after the conflict. Many Remington rolling blocks were refitted with Liege-made barrels and exported. Not likely that such a
weapon using an already established (and supplanted by the M1868) U.S. breech system and U.S. parts would have been submitted as a trial gun to the U.S. in
1870... in a caliber not yet...
