Hello all, I'm new to the British Militaria but have been posting on Parallax Bill's military surplus rifle forum for a few years.

I just received an 1885 Mk II from IMA. I ordered the "special select"option, and I was curious how my rifle stacks up against any of your IMA Mk
IIs.

Looking at the pictures of your rifle, the thing that concerns me is the condition of the wood, particularly that crack in the buttstock. If you are plannig
to shoot it, you might be wise to trade for a Mk. IV. However, you might consider sending it back and asking for a better Mk. II with better wood--
particularly when you paid for "special select". I know persons have sent rifles back to IMA or Atlanta Cutlery if they were unhappy with the
condition and they usually ended up...

Good point. I think I'll try and return it and get a Mk IV. I'm still torn a bit, the rifle looks nice overall but I'm going to gamble on getting
something more suited to shooting. Looks like I may have to eat my special select fee, but because of the east-west time difference I'll have to call
tomorrow and see what IMA says about an exchange.

Thanks for all the info!

If this is the "special select" condition on the Mk. IIs, I'm thinking a Mk IV might be worth a try, especially as something I'll be
shooting. The Mk II page at IMA mentions that they now have "a few back in stock", and I wonder if that means that what they have now are all
previous returns. I was willing to let things slide with the cleaning rod, but the stock's condition doesn't seem to be good for shooting. The wood on...

Another consideration, for shooting purposes, is that your rifle appears to have the Mark I rear sight - no distinct "notch" for a good sight
picture. Probably made for an O.K. "battle sight" for snap shooting, but pretty much useless for consistent hold when shooting at targets. (I have a
MarkI/II "upgrade" rifle which still had the MkI sight on it, and for shooting I took it off and replaced it with a Mark II. )

As stated, the barrel pitting is minor and far from an area of concern. The bore looks VG and overall exterior of the metal is above average, save for the rod
which is pretty bad. The wood is probably average for late dated MK II rifles this late in the game. The buttstock may or may not crack to failure, but you are
right to be concerned. Equally important is the area around the forestock pin, which looks too loose. If the forestock moves at all in this area, it will
split. I've glass or...

That's what I thought. The barrel on the "untouched" Nepalese Martini I bought from IMA earlier had worse pitting, but still seemed safe to fire.
So I'm not terribly worried about it...but having a second opinion never hurts!
