I have been somewhat remiss in posting images from the National Muster of the Grand Army of the Frontier I attended some weeks ago in Nebraska ..... Mind you, I am only now beginning to thaw out! Some mighty cold shooting there ......

I also regret to report that, for the first time in the three years that "Battle Rifle" categories have been offered, I let down the British Empire by coming in only Second in the Black Powder Single Shot Battle Rifle category in the Main...

October 26, anniversary of the first shoot at What Cheer range

I was looking for info on the What Cheer range, something Coyote and I had often discussed. Since the range is no longer extant, he wondered if it would even be possible to find the location at all. Well, time and the Internet make all things searchable, and behold, from the archives of the New York Times, here is the article on the results of the first What Cheer match, 134 years ago today.

Well chaps,
I figure it is time to set the date for next year's Alberta shoot;

Dont have a next year calendar, but I would be interested to know which weekend in June suits you the best.

It can be either the weekend around the 14th, (Sat and Sun)
or, the next weekend....roughly 21st
Or, the last wekend of June.

The last weekend is a bit iffy for me, as we Might be in haytime.
The only problem with the weekend of about the 21st, is...

The third annual Victorian Tactical Field Day, sponsored by Ringwood State Park and the Royal Sussex Regimental Society, is one of the few events that commemorate the second Boer War - fought between Britain and independent Boer republics in South Africa between 1899 and 1901.

The event featured army drills, encampments, period cooking (the British forces even had a collapsible, cast-iron stove), and demonstrations of civilian life - including a Victorian tea party.

Wanted, Rifle range, Easton PA area

I am trying to justify a trip to the east coast next spring. Grandkids in Illinois and Maryland, Friends all over the eastern seaboard, invitation to a shoot in Kentucky.

Looking for a rifle range in the Easton, PA area to hold a Victorian Rifleman Playday in April 2010. Any one have any contacts with gun clubs in the area that would be willing to host such an event.

Would you come?

OK this is the only place I could think this would fit.
I am curious to opinions on the relationship of the firearm to the firing point ie is the muzzle supposed to be on the line and the target 100 yds/mt from the muzzle or can the muzzle be ahead of the firing line as long as the breach is not?
The reason I ask was when looking at people at the firing line standing the toe's are usually at the firing line and the muzzle well over it but when kneeling or prone the body is much...

A Martini of Her Own

For the past few weeks, my lovely new bride has been holding my Martini Enfield .303 hostage until I bought one for her......DD came through and traded me a lovely little ME Artillery Carbine in .303, with a stock disc showing it as issued to the Newfoundland Regiment, prior to Newfoundland's admission into Canada. It was more than likely issued to the 1st Battalion, Newfoundland Regiment, for training prior to their being deployed to France in 1914.........and which was almost entirely...

I know it's probably too late to be of any use to anyone, but the Historical Breechloading Smallarms Association (HBSA) is holding its annual long-range event for Vintage Rifles (blackpowder breechloaders) in three weeks time. There are two classes: match rifle and as-issued service rifle. Course of fire is up to five ranging shots to get on paper: the first hit becomes the first of three convertible sighters: then fifteen rounds to count. In the morning we shoot at 900...

Missing Video

Some time ago Rosswoop (I think) posted a video clip of a Playday on You Tube. The one with a Fleetwood Mac backing track. This has been a regular source of relaxation, but it seems to have disappeared. I can still find the 1 minute clip of the volley but not the 5 minute clip of the whole shoot. Anyone know what happened to it? And more importantly is it still accessible anywhere?

The lovely weather today has me thinking, and has also gotten my trigger finger itching. Since it usually takes a month or more to agree on a date, and the cycle dictates that I should be the host this time, I'd like to propose another New England shoot in the March/April timeframe in Milford, MA. Any comments?

OK perhaps it's a bit premature to be thinking about this as a new guy who hasn't even attended the Alberta shoot, but what the heck. I'm all about jumping in both feet and blindfolded! Shooting antique guns next to my face and not headspacing that SMLE before you fire it the first time! Life in the fast lane!

The talk on the New England 2008 thread about a public shoot really kind of pushed me to thinking about this more seriously, so here's my idea. Tell me...

Any way a pdf file can be sent and submitted size (Photo w/scale on fired) and fired target can be submitted for verification?

Douglas showed pictures and results of a South African shoot, In the "Siege of Ladysmith" thread.

I was wondering, I don't think we hear from any of these chaps,
They obviously have a lot of experience shooting the old guns, Do you think we could encourage some of them to join us here?
I feel SA is rather thinly represented right now.
